Hoggard coach fired after arrest for fight at school

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Hoggard High School teacher assistant and assistant football coach has been fired days after being arrested for allegedly assaulting several students at school. A New Hanover County Schools spokeswoman said Brown’s termination was effective yesterday.

The school district said Thursday after Brown was arrested it would wait for the results of an investigation before moving forward. Brown had been suspended with pay since the fight at Hoggard March 8.

Sheriff’s deputies charged Brown with five counts of simple assault and one count of assault with a deadly weapon.

According to the arrest warrants, Brown hit multiple students in the head with a closed fist, grabbed the throat of another alleged victim and even took a yard-long wooden stick and threatened the students with it.

Fire that killed soldier, girls ruled accidental

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (AP) — An unattended charcoal grill may have ignited the early morning fire that killed a decorated Green Beret and his young daughters.

Cumberland County investigators ruled Tuesday that Chief Warrant Officer Edward Cantrell, 6-year-old Isabella and 4-year-old Natalia died from smoke inhalation as the result of an accidental fire. Cantrell leapt from the second floor of their burning house in Hope Mills on March 6, only to wrap himself in a blanket and run back
inside for the girls.

Investigators said the fire began on an outdoor deck near a charcoal grill, though damage to the home was too extensive to make a definitive determination.

Cantrell served six combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, returning from his last mission in August. He earned four Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart.

Slain UNC student’s photo used on Indian ads

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The image of slain University of North Carolina Chapel Hill student body president Eve Carson has turned up in an unlikely place: adorning billboards in southern India.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that Carson’s picture is being used to advertise a company called Jubeerich Consultancy, which offers study opportunities and job
placements in Western countries

It’s not clear how the company came across the photo of the Athens, Ga. native, who was abducted, robbed and killed March 5, 2008. Two men – Laurence Lovette Jr. and Demario Atwater – are serving life sentences for Carson’s death.

The company did not respond to emails seeking comment, and a woman who answered the phone declined to give her name but said she had not seen the billboards.

Romney pushes GOP presidential race toward a close

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Mitt Romney says he’s “almost there” in his six-year pursuit of the Republican presidential nomination, having defeated Rick Santorum in the Illinois GOP primary.

The GOP front-runner is urging Republicans in a campaign email sent after Tuesday’s victory to fall in line behind his bid.

Romney and his allies spent hundreds of thousands of dollars more than Santorum and his backers in Illinois, and it showed in the results: Romney was beating Santorum by 47 percent to 35 percent.

Romney was the clear favorite among Illinois Republicans who were most concerned about picking someone who is capable of taking on President Barack Obama.

In an appeal to the centrist independents who will decide the general election, Romney pledged to work with Democrats or, in his words, “die trying.”
