Library hosts spring book sale

Saturday, March 17th, 2012

WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY)– Friends of New Hanover County Public Library are hosting their spring book sale Monday-Wednesday this week.

Prices for most items are initially marked between $1-$3 with price cuts every two days. Wednesday all items will be reduced to a dime and stacks of books cost 50 cents per foot.

Friends of the Library book sales have raised $945,000 since 1983 and are hoping to reach the $1 million mark this year.

“Every penny that we make a the book sale goes directly back to the library,” says Paige Owens, Assistant Director of the library. “That money goes into special projects, additional books we couldn’t afford otherwise and some of our nifty programs like the loan of e-book readers.”

Books, DVD’s, CD’s and other materials on sale are primarily recycled items donated by other readers.

The bi-annual book sale is operated by volunteers.

Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy Cape Fear Wildlife Expo

Saturday, March 17th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– Outdoor enthusiast are enjoying three fun-filled days at the 4th annual Cape Fear Wildlife Expo this weekend.

The event features fishing and hunting classes, boat and wildlife displays, as well as contests and other outdoor vendors.

Last year over 8,000 people came to check out the expo and this year event organizers are projecting somewhere between 10-12,000.

They say there is a special focus on the youth this year.

“We had over 800 kids that came through. They actually get classroom credits from 14 different counties throughout North Carolina,” said organizer W.C. Lanier. “This year we will probably have 2,500 kids that come through and do the scavenger hunt. They get a prize to visit conservation booths. It’s a learning experience.”

The expo is held in both the Wilmington Convention Center and in the Coastline Convention Center.

The last day of the Cape Fear Wildlife Expo is Sunday, March 18th from 10 am-5 pm.
