GOP hopeful Gingrich back in NC visiting 4 cities

Saturday, April 14th, 2012

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — Newt Gingrich is heading back to North Carolina to try to rebuild momentum for his Republican presidential campaign that was in danger of getting swept away along with Rick Santorum’s departure from the race.

Gingrich was slated to return Saturday for public events in Charlotte, Greensboro, Wilson and Raleigh. He’ll speak at two “tax day” rallies, the Wilson County Republican Party election-year kickoff and tour the NASCAR Hall of Fame in North Carolina’s largest city.

The former U.S. House speaker from Georgia spent time in Raleigh on Monday and New Bern on Tuesday – the day Santorum announced he was suspending his campaign. Gingrich said he still planned to keep campaigning, although acknowledging Mitt Romney was the GOP’s likely nominee.

The North Carolina Republican presidential primary is May 8.

Hampstead controlled burn now out of control, spreading quickly

Saturday, April 14th, 2012

HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY) — Crews are battling a blaze near Hampstead after a property owner’s controlled burn got out of control.

According to Pender County Emergency Management Director Tom Collins, the fire has burned nearly 150 acres and is still spreading. It started near the intersection of Hoover Road and Godfrey Creek Road in Hampstead.

Crews from Pender, New Hanover and Onslow Counties are helping control the fire. Collins said there is still a lot of work to do in order to secure the borders and put out the flames. Firefighters will likely be working into the night.

Officials have called in all their resources to help extinguish the fire before it poses any threat to people and structures.

No homes are in the path of the fire at this point, and no one has been asked to evacuate. The only structure facing possible damage is a barn.
