2 Democratic governor candidates in Durham debate

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) – Two of the three high-profile candidates for the Democratic nomination for North Carolina governor are sitting down in front of TV cameras to talk about why they want to win next month’s primary.

Former U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge and current state Rep. Bill Faison were scheduled to participate Wednesday evening in a debate at the studios of Durham television station WTVD. The station planned to stream live the one-hour forum online and re-air it on conventional television Saturday evening.

Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton’s campaign says he’s not participating because the compact primary election schedule doesn’t allow him to attend each forum.

Dalton, Etheridge and Faison all are planning to participate in three more TV debates next week. There are also three more candidates seeking the Democratic nomination.

Woman facing murder charge in Charlotte stabbing

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Authorities in Charlotte say a 48-year-old woman faces murder charges in the stabbing death of her ex-husband during what’s described as a domestic argument.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say Carole LaRossa is charged in the death of 51-year-old James Arthur LaRossa. WCNC-TV in Charlotte reported that a union official identified James LaRossa as a retired New York police officer. Union officials couldn’t be reached for comment Wednesday.

Police say they were called shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday to an apartment complex. When officers arrived, they found James LaRossa dead and his wife injured.

A statement from police said both people were stabbed, but the woman’s injuries are not serious.

Carole LaRossa is being held in the Mecklenburg County jail without bond.

Third-party group delivers ballot petition in NC

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – A national group with a novel approach to nominating political candidates is poised to get access to the North Carolina ballot.

Members of Americans Elect delivered more than 86,000 petition signatures to the state Board of Elections in Raleigh Wednesday.

Once the state double-checks the certifications by county elections officials, the group’s nominee will be listed on this November’s ballot along with Democratic, Republican and Libertarian candidates.

Americans Elect will choose a presidential candidate in an online primary this June.

Luke Shuffield, the group’s organizer at Duke University, says the effort is primarily intended to break what he calls political gridlock. The group says it has won ballot access in 21 states, and plans to have its candidate eligible to receive votes in all 50.
