NC Republicans say April 23 session will be quiet

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Republican legislators don’t plan to take any substantive action when the General Assembly reconvenes later this month.

House Speaker Thom Tillis wrote colleagues Monday saying there will be no recorded votes taken when his chamber meets at noon April 23. He encouraged most colleagues to stay at home and to defer financial compensation for that day’s work.

Senate leader Phil Berger’s chief of staff also confirmed Monday that the Senate has no plans for recorded votes that day.

The Legislature agreed last fall to return to Raleigh every couple of months until the budget-adjustment session begins May 16. Democrats have worried the mini-work sessions could be used to override more vetoes by Gov. Beverly Perdue.

The Republicans completed one override when they returned to Raleigh in early January.
