NC college’s students propose fee increase

Monday, April 9th, 2012

GREENSBORO, NC (AP) — While many college students in North Carolina have protested the rising cost of higher education, students at Guilford College are saying they should pay more.

The News & Record of Greensboro reports that the college’s Community Senate has made a formal proposal that the school raise activity fees by $100 over the next two years. Student leaders want the revenue to bolster the college’s financial aid program.

North Carolina provides some state support for residents who attend private colleges. Guilford is losing $2.5 million in that aid because of budget cuts by the General Assembly.

The college’s board of trustees will consider the proposal in June.

Guilford students currently pay nearly $40,000 a year in tuition, fees, accommodations and supplies.

Campaign says Santorum’s daughter is recovering

Monday, April 9th, 2012

Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum’s campaign says his hospitalized daughter is recovering and could leave the hospital soon.

Santorum spokesman Hogan Gidley said Monday that 3-year-old Bella could be released from a northern Virginia hospital by the end of the day.

She was hospitalized Friday. Her father did not campaign Monday so he could be with his daughter, who suffers from a rare genetic condition.

Bella was hospitalized earlier this year with pneumonia. Her father faces an uphill battle against front-runner Mitt Romney in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. Santorum often says Bella wasn’t expected to live beyond her first birthday.

Gingrich visits Raleigh Monday for NC support

Monday, April 9th, 2012

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — With his presidential campaign ailing, Newt Gingrich is hoping for a boost from North Carolina.

The former speaker of the U.S. House will make two campaign stops in Raleigh today, meeting with Republican and independent black voters and having lunch at a restaurant.

The visit comes a day after Gingrich said his campaign has nearly $4.5 million in debt and that he expects rival Mitt Romney to win the GOP nomination. Gingrich says he’s staying in the race to influence the party’s platform.

Gingrich was briefly the frontrunner after his surprise January 21 victory in the South Carolina primary, but he has been a distant third since then, trailing Romney and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum.

The North Carolina primary is May 8.
