Wilson repeats opposition to Interstate 95 tolls

Saturday, April 7th, 2012

WILSON, NC (AP) — The Wilson City Council is repeating its opposition to tolls along Interstate 95.

The Wilson Daily Times reports the council revisited its 2006 vote against toll booths, taken when the North Carolina Legislature was just considering charging people to drive on I-95.

Earlier this year, the state Department of Transportation announced it would spend more than $4 billion widening and improving the 182 miles of I-95 in North Carolina, then charge tolls along the entire route to pay for the work.

Officials in Wilson say tolls would hurt locals who use the interstate and reduce the amount of tourism in the area. Wilson City Manager Grant Goings says other cities along I-95 are also planning to oppose the new tolls.

Pig pickin’ pulls in funds for baby girl who needs new heart

Saturday, April 7th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Our community came together Saturday to pig out for a great cause.

Hannah Dombrowski is a baby girl who needs a new heart. She was born with a tumor on hers. Hannah’s father is New Hanover County Sheriff’s deputy David Dombrowski, who was involved in a fatal car accident on MLK Parkway back in January.

Poor Piggy’s hosted the event and said part of their business model is to hold fundraisers for community members and organizations.

“We’re Christians, and we believe in giving back to our community,” owner Ed Coulbourn said. “She’s just a little girl that has a lot of people loving on her and praying for her. We just felt like it was a great opportunity to help a local family out.”

Hannah is at Duke getting treatment and waiting for a transplant. The next fundraiser for Hannah’s heart is set for April 22 at Britt Motorsports. For more information on how you can help, visit facebook.com/prayersforhannah.

Charleston ‘thug’ website seeks to out criminals

Saturday, April 7th, 2012

CHARLESTON, SC (AP) — A website in Charleston is outing people who the authors allege are criminals by putting their Facebook and Twitter pictures with money and guns on a new blog.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports the “Charleston Thug Life” blog has profiled more than two dozen supposed hoodlums since coming online on March 31. The blog also criticizes local schools and civil rights groups.

Neither the people profiled, nor the people running the blog would talk to the newspaper. But North Charleston police say they are keeping an eye on the site as an investigative tool.

The authors of the blog wrote they are publishing information not released by the local media.

Local civil rights leaders say the blog sets back discussions of racial justice and equality.
