NC lottery makes largest education transfer

Friday, April 27th, 2012

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A huge jackpot last month helped the North Carolina Education Lottery record its highest quarterly ticket sales ever and its largest cash transfer for education in the lottery’s history.

The lottery announced Thursday it had transferred another $127 million earmarked for state and local education initiatives.

Lottery executive director Alice Garland attributed the highest quarterly payment ever to public education to the Mega Millions jackpot that ultimately reached $640 million in late March. The lottery generated a record $445 million in sales for the three months ending March 31.

The lottery says it now expects to transfer $450 million for the fiscal year ending June 30, about $25 million more than the original estimate. Those extra proceeds would go to counties for school construction and repairs.

Modeling fashions for domestic violence awareness

Friday, April 27th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Domestic violence is an issue that tears apart homes and lives. But for more than 25 years, the Domestic Violence Shelter & Services of Wilmington has been working to restore those affected.

Today marked the organization’s 20th Annual Fashion Show and Silent Auction. It’s the biggest fundraiser of the year and goes to help women, children and men who fall victim to domestic abuse. The non-profit provides emergency shelter and on-going support services.

“Not everyone will come forward. Not everyone is going to acknowledge that they need help,” said Diane Lomax, the shelter’s Director of Operations. “But when they do need help and when they are ready to seek help, we are there to help them.”

During the fashion show, volunteers modeled clothing from Vintage Values, the shelter’s retail shops.

If you missed the luncheon, a dinner and live auction will be held at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside at 6:00 p.m.
