Columbus County schools to receive bond money

Columbus County, NC (WWAY) — Some Columbus County schools will get a facelift, thanks to a 3.1 million dollar bond.

The school district recently received word it was one of four in the state to get a share of 12 million dollars. The money is part of the Qualified School Construction Bond program.

No projects are in place yet, but the school superintendent says the money will be used to renovate buildings.

The district will be responsible for paying back a maximum of 50% of the bond.

Woman taken to the hospital after fire destroys home

WILMINGTON, NC (AP) — EMS took a Wilmington woman to the hospital, after a fire destroyed her home.

It happened just before 4:00 a.m. in the Eastwood Village community just off Eastwood Road. When firefighters arrived, the home was fully involved, which means there was no chance for firefighters to go inside and rescue anyone.

The woman inside the home managed to escape through a window. Firefighters found her lying in the bushes outside. She is in the hospital with non-life threatening injures.

The fire destroyed the home. Total damages are estimated at $250,000.

No word yet on the cause. The investigation continues.
