Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

GASTONIA, NC (AP) — Police are looking for a man who posed as a sheriff’s deputy and took more than $300 from a 73-year-old Gastonia woman.

The woman told police a man came to her door and said he was a deputy investigating a crime that included counterfeit bills.

The woman said the suspect came inside and discussed the investigation and asked to check the serial numbers of some of her money.

The woman said he left after examining her money, finding what he said were several fake bills. He said he was going to the bank to check on the distribution of fake bills. She says the envelope he left her was filled with paper.

The woman said she needed the $340 to pay health insurance, electricity and the cable television bill.

Weekend weather delays ‘road diet’ reversal in Carolina Beach

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Work to reverse the controversial “road diet” in Carolina Beach did not start as planned today.

The Department of Transportation says because of the weather over the weekend, the contractor who was supposed to do the reversal had to finish a different project today.

The road diet reversal will take the current two-lane setup and expand Lake Park Blvd. back to a four-lane road. There will be no bike lanes.

Carolina Beach business owners are just ready for the work to get done.

“It’s a little frustrating, because we’re all very excited to get the road back to the way it should be and the way it was,” business owner Janeen Williams. “It is a little frustrating, but we can’t control the weather, so I just want it done this week.”

Resurfacing should take about two days. The DOT says the whole job should take about five days to complete after crews get started.
