Sheriff’s son arrested for DWI, will plead guilty

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Highway Patrol arrested the son of Brunswick County’s Sheriff Saturday for drunk driving. John W. Ingram VI is charged with DWI.

Ingram was released into the custody of his father, Sheriff John Ingram V, after the younger Ingram was processed at the Brunswick County Detention Center.

“As Sheriff of Brunswick County I have taken an aggressive stance with regards to people Driving While Impaired, and this situation is no exception,” Sheriff Ingram said in a statement. “I applaud the NC State Highway Patrol for their hard work and dedication and appreciate the fact that they handled this arrest like every other arrest with extreme professionalism.

Ingram said his son will do whatever the law requires him and will plead guilty as charged.

“As a parent I am sadden by the fact that my son made the choice to drink and drive endangering himself and countless others on the roadways,” Sheriff Ingram said. “However, I pray this will be a lesson that will enable him to make better decisions in the future.”

More jurors being picked in NC murder trial

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A Raleigh man accused in the death of a member of North Carolina’s State Board of Education is on trial for his life.

More jurors were being chosen Monday in the trial of 32-year-old Jason Williford. He has pleaded not guilty to charges that he raped and battered 62-year-old Kathy Taft. Williford could face the death penalty if he is convicted.

The Greenville resident and grandmother was recovering from surgery at a friend’s Raleigh home when she was killed in March 2010.

Williford was arrested the following month after police say DNA evidence on a cigarette butt they found linked him to the crime. His attorneys tried unsuccessfully to have that evidence thrown out, arguing police should have obtained a search warrant before picking up the evidence.

GOP hopeful Gingrich back in NC visiting 10 cities

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — Newt Gingrich is spending time in North Carolina this week trying to rebuild momentum for his Republican presidential campaign.

Gingrich will attend a campaign event Monday night in Wilmington. He will speak at several rallies and campaign events the next few days in more than 10 cities, including Charlotte, Mooresville and Fayetteville.

The former U.S. House speaker from Georgia is trying to keep his campaign alive. Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum’s departure from the race two weeks has narrowed the Republican field.

Gingrich said he still planned to keep campaigning, although acknowledging Mitt Romney was the GOP’s likely nominee.

The North Carolina Republican presidential primary is May 8.
