Fire call to Thalian turns out to be misunderstanding

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — If you saw firefighters at Thalian Hall on your way to work this morning, it was all one big misunderstanding.

Just before 8 a.m., firefighters were called to the historic building that is also Wilmington’s city hall after someone reported smoke. However, it turned out to be cement dust from some construction work.

The building does not open until 8 a.m., so only a handful of people had to be evacuated.

CFCC students raise money through annual plant sale

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Tomorrow you have the chance to spruce up your garden while supporting local students. Cape Fear Community College hosts its annual plant sale at the North Campus.

One-hundred percent of the proceeds go right back to educating students. The money raised makes it possible for them to get needed hands-on experience.

“Hopefully with the money we raise here we’ll have enough money to buy fertilizer, buy gas and get practical experience,” Landscape Gardening Instructor Ken Wells said.

The plant sale is from 8 a.m. until noon at the college’s Landscape Gardening Center off of Sidbury Road in Castle Hayne.

FIRST ON 3: Man charged with assaulting CFCC pres. accused with attack in jail

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The man accused of assaulting the president of Cape Fear Community College is in more trouble.

Norfleet Midyette Jr. has been in jail since April 10, the day he allegedly hit Dr. Eric McKeithan several times with a stack of papers.

Now Midyette is accused of assaulting either a deputy or detention officer while in custody.

He’s now charged with malicious conduct by a prisoner. He’s now under $15,000 bond.
