‘Ride of Silence’ focuses on bike safety, accident victims

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Bicyclists will hit Wilmington’s streets tomorrow evening on a quiet mission. Wilmington is one of 75 cities across the country hosting a “Ride of Silence.”

The organized ride begins at Hanover Center near Empie park at 6:30 p.m. The Cape Fear Cyclists set up the event in honor of injured and killed bicyclists.

One participant stopped by the good morning carolina set to talk about safety.

“With gas prices the way they are, there’s going to be more and more people on bicycles,” said Jim Iannucci, who was in a bike accident himself. “For cyclists, obey the laws, ride right, walk left and if at all possible ride with traffic on the road”

Tomorrow’s ride is open to everyone.

May is National Bike Month.

General Assembly session isn’t just about budget adjustments

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

Associated Press

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The North Carolina General Assembly gets back to work Wednesday for its budget-adjustment session that also will likely include sensitive topics like gambling, annexation rules and fracking.

Republicans in charge of the Legislature will make changes to the second year of the two-year budget approved last year. But they have other issues to resolve before going home, probably in early July.

Lawmakers must change state gambling laws if an expanded gambling compact between Gov. Bev Perdue and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is to be carried out. They’ll also consider whether to change new involuntary annexation laws to respond to a court decision.

House and Senate Republicans also are trying to fashion a regulatory framework to permit a form of shale gas exploration in a couple of years.
