New ‘Bachelorette’ season will be ‘drastically different’

Monday, May 14th, 2012

A Bachelorette season with no hot tub scenes? No overnight dates?

Along with the clinking of Champagne glasses and the passing out of roses, those have become staples of the ABC franchise. But this time around, expect a “different vibe” with single mom Emily Maynard in the Bachelorette driver’s seat for Season 8, which kicks off tonight at 9:30 p.m. on WWAY NewsChannel 3.

Maynard will start out meeting 25 men — including a mushroom farmer, a-race car driver and a singer/songwriter.

“Emily’s season is drastically different,” says host Chris Harrison. Maynard, 26, was engaged to Nascar driver Ricky Hendrick when he died in an airplane crash in 2004. He died before she gave birth to their daughter, Ricki, now 6.

Dalton challenges McCrory to debates across NC this summer

Monday, May 14th, 2012

CHARLOTTE, NC (NEWS RELEASE) -– In a press conference at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, Lieutenant Governor Walter Dalton today challenged his gubernatorial opponent Pat McCrory to a series of eight town hall debates on jobs and education to be held at community colleges in every region of the state.

Citing his experience and vision to align education with the jobs of the future, Dalton stressed the crucial role North Carolina’s community colleges serve in training a globally competitive workforce and attracting new industry to the state.

“I have a plan to tailor education to jobs now and to provide training for the industries of the future,” said Dalton. “Community colleges are the intersection between innovative education and the 21st Century economy, so where better to debate our competing visions? North Carolina is at a crossroads and the people deserve a straightforward discussion on the future of our state. I invite Pat McCrory to tell us what he stands for and commit to joining me at these debates.”

Under Dalton’s proposal, the two candidates would hold two debates each month at community colleges across North Carolina, including:

· June: Durham Technical Community College and Pitt Community College

· July: Guilford Technical Community College and Fayetteville Technical Community College

· August: Cape Fear Community College (Wilmington) and Asheville-Buncombe Community College

· September: Central Piedmont Community College (Charlotte) and College of the Albemarle (Elizabeth City)

These debates would be in addition to the traditional ones held in October.

Fort Bragg soldier shot by police dies

Monday, May 14th, 2012

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (AP) — A Fort Bragg soldier shot by a Fayetteville police officer earlier this month has died.

Twenty-seven-year-old Staff Sgt. Mark Lewis Salazar was shot by officers in the driveway of his family’s home in Fayetteville on May 5. A 911 caller told police Salazar was standing in his front yard firing off shots at 3 a.m.

Police say they shot Salazar after he pointed his gun at them.

He died May 12 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Salazar had served as a graphic illustrator for the Army Special Operations Command’s 4th Military Information Support Group.

The State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the shooting. The three Fayetteville police officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave.
