NC group: Panel, not lawmakers, to draw districts

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A bi-partisan group says it is time to stop allowing politicians to draw new congressional and legislative districts every decade so they stay in power.

The North Carolina Coalition for Lobbying and Government Reform urged the state Senate on Tuesday to pass legislation now for the next round of redistricting after the 2020 census.

A bill modeled on an Iowa law would direct the General Assembly’s non-partisan professional staff to redraw legislative and congressional districts rather than the lawmakers doing so.

The House overwhelmingly approved the measure last year.

Former state Republican Party Chairman and GOP Congressman Bill Cobey says efforts by North Carolina politicians to pick the voters they’ll represent have been fought out in courts for years after the redistricting decisions following the 1990 and 2000 censuses.

STORMTRACK 3: TD Beryl starts to head our way, heavy rain expected tomorrow

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Beryl continues to soak Florida and Georgia with heavy rain this morning. The storm remains a tropical depression, but is still well organized. It has now begun it’s trip to the north, and it will accelerate toward southeastern North Carolina tonight.

Here’s what we expect. For today, we’ll still see some sunshine across the area, but a few storms will remain possible. After midnight tonight, some of the tropical rains from Beryl will arrive in the area. Expect heavy downpours from time to time, especially along the coast. As the storm moves overhead, some modest winds up to 25-30 mph will be possible. This period of heavy rain could last through midday Wednesday, and if things pan out just right – we could end up with several inches of total rain. A flood watch is in effect through Wednesday afternoon, as some areas could see rising water.

By late Wednesday afternoon the storm will be offshore and dry air will begin to build into the area. This will leave us with sunshine for Thursday.

There are currently no tropical watches/warnings in effect for our area.

Stay tuned to WWAY for updates, and head to Hurricanes 101.
