Feds probe vandalism tied to NC Confederate marker

Saturday, May 26th, 2012

REIDSVILLE, NC (AP) — North Carolina and federal crime investigators are looking into the vandalism of a residence and business owned by a vocal opponent of a Confederate monument in a North Carolina town.

The Times-News of Burlington reports that the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, and the Secret Service are also looking into the damage caused to property belonging to 66-year-old Ernest Pinnix.

Pinnix spoke publicly against restoring a Confederate soldier monument in Reidsville that was damaged in a traffic accident in 2011. Reidsville’s City Council recently voted to rebuild the monument in a cemetery filled with Civil War dead.

Caswell County Sheriff’s Lt. Frank Rose says vandals spray painted the phrase “the statue’s coming back” and an obscene insult against President Barack Obama on Pinnix’s auto repair shop.

City pools open for unofficial start of summer

Saturday, May 26th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — This weekend is the unofficial start of summer. That means folks are firing up the grills, making waves at the beach and jumping into our city pools.

Wilmington’s three pools are open Saturday and Memorial Day as well as Saturday, June 2 and Saturday, June 9 from noon to 5 p.m. They’ll open for the season starting June 11.

The Northside Splash Pad right next to the Northside Pool and across the street from the Wilmington Police Department is great for little swimmers and is already open every Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“We finally got some decent weather, and it’s not raining, so it’s nice to get in the water and get some warmth and get back in the water like we’re supposed to be,” dad Jared Johnson said. “We just came from Hawaii, so it’s nice to get back into it.”

You can also visit the Robert Strange Pool on S. 10th Street and the Legion Stadium Pool off of Carolina Beach Road.
