Jurors end 4th day of talks at John Edwards trial

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2012

GREENSBORO, NC (AP) — The jury has ended a fourth day of deliberations without reaching a verdict at the campaign finance trial of former presidential candidate John Edwards.

The jurors stopped their talks Wednesday about 15 minutes earlier than usual because a juror needed to leave for a personal reason. The judge did not elaborate.

The jury did not have any questions Wednesday and they did not ask for any evidence.

Prosecutors say Edwards masterminded a plan to use money from two wealthy donors to hide his pregnant mistress as he sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008.

Edwards faces 30 years in prison if convicted of six campaign finance charges. The jury began deliberations Friday after nearly four weeks of testimony.

French passenger not charged in diverted flight

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2012

BANGOR, ME (AP) — A French citizen accused of causing a US Airways flight to be diverted to Maine by claiming she had a surgically implanted device will soon be headed back home.

U.S. Attorney Thomas Delahanty II said Wednesday that the evidence doesn’t support charges against the passenger, 41-year-old Lucie Zeeko Marigot.

He says Marigot told investigators that she had been wronged by doctors and wanted President Barack Obama to provide her with medical assistance. She’s being turned over to Customs and Border Protection and will be returned to France.

Flight 787 was traveling from Paris to North Carolina when it was diverted Tuesday to Bangor. The Boeing 767 with 179 passengers and nine crew spent several hours in Bangor before continuing to Charlotte.

NAACP state chief back at Legislative Building

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2012

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The leader of a North Carolina civil rights group arrested last year for disrupting a House session says he and others are back at the Legislative Building to ensure lawmakers work to benefit all citizens and not a privileged few.

The Rev. William Barber of the state chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People spoke at a news conference during its lobbying day Wednesday. He pressed for more education funding and a progressive tax system while rejecting photo identification requirements for voters.

Barber pleaded guilty this month to misdemeanor disorderly conduct. He was one of several protesters who stood and shouted in the House gallery a year ago Thursday. He received no sentence.

Barber has returned to the building several times since his arrest.
