Babysitter charged after child falls from third-story balcony

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police have arrested a woman for felony child abuse after a child she was taking care of fell from a balcony.

Police arrested Willisa Nicole Dowd, 21, at her home in the Campus Edge Apartments yesterday.

Investigators say Dowd was babysitting a 20-month-old girl April 4 when the child fell from a third-floor balcony, suffering severe injuries. The child’s mother took the baby to the hospital after Dowd told her of the injuries. The hospital reported the incident to Social Services, and the WPD Juvenile Crimes Detective Division began investigating.

The child’s mother says Dowd then assaulted her on April 21.

Dowd is charged with felony child abuse/neglect inflicting serious injury, simple assault, conspiracy and obstructing justice. She is in jail on a $7,000 bond.
