Friday, June 29th, 2012

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A fourth suspect is in jail accused with ripping off a disabled veteran in Brunswick County.

Pamela Springer, 45, was booked into the Brunswick County Jail under $100,000 secured bond, according to the jail’s website. She’s charged with felony conspiracy.

Investigators say Springer and four other women took about $260,000 from a disabled veteran one of them was working for as an in-home caregiver. Detectives say they used the money to pay off bills for customers of a a debt consolidation/bill pay service business.

Three of the women, Monica Machelle Frazier, Maria Shaw Sloan, Velda Denise Barnhill, turned themselves in to New Hanover County earlier this week. Detectives are still looking for Lisa Veronica McGee McLain, who they say is the ringleader of the operation. She worked for the victim, and investigators say she stole his personal information allowing them to rip him off.

Murder convict may go free with new evidence

Friday, June 29th, 2012

GREENSBORO, NC (AP) — A North Carolina man who spent nearly 17 years in prison for a murder may be freed in a case in which law officers and prosecutors hid key details from defense lawyers.

Superior Court Judge Joe Turner is scheduled to hear arguments Friday on whether to release 62-year-old LaMonte Armstrong.

Armstrong was convicted of the 1988 killing of Ernestine Compton, one of his former professors at North Carolina A&T State University. Key to the case was testimony from a convicted felon who has since said police pressured him to accuse Armstrong.

Police Chief Ken Miller said investigators have now identified a palm print found at the crime scene belonging to another suspect in the slaying who was later convicted of killing his father and died in a 2010 traffic accident.
