Volunteers build new roof for American Legion post in Carolina Beach

Thursday, June 14th, 2012

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The American Legion in Carolina Beach is getting help with a new roof on its building, and it’s all for free.

Home Depot found a way to give back to the American Legion Post 129, by donating a number of supplies and a team of volunteers to help fix their leaking roof.

“(It’s) a way of giving back,” said Dead Moss, a Team Depot volunteer. “You know it’s a volunteer thing. We enjoy doing it, especially when it comes to the vets and things like that. We can’t do enough for them.”

With the weather finally clear, an army of volunteers began Thursday giving back to a group of veterans that has given so much.

“We immediately assessed the situation, and we applied for a grant through Team Depot, and we were able to obtain the grant, and to purchase all the materials that were needed for the roof and everything,” Moss said.

Pleasure Island American Legion Post 129 contacted Home Depot’s volunteer program Team Depot, which jumped at the chance to help out. Volunteers soon assessed the damage to the post’s roof and got the repair process underway with the help of supplies and tools donated by Home Depot.

“We have four workers from Home Depot. They’ve been digging the ditch, because we have to put a drain in from the roof, flat roof, so they’ve been doing that,” Post 129 Commander and Carolina Beach Mayor Ray Rothrock said.

The donated materials arrived at Post 129 Monday. The work started Thursday as volunteers tore down the old roof and began work on the new one. They hope to wrap up construction within the next 10 days, just in time to host a wedding.
