Southport, Wrightsville Beach get state pedestrian project grants

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Southport and Wrightsville Beach are among 13 municipalities across the state that will get help with bicycle and pedestrian planning, thanks to $390,000 in grants awarded this month by the NC Department of Transportation.

Both Southport and Wrightsville Beach will get $24,800, while each chipping in $6,200 in local money. The money will go toward pedestrian plans.

Now in its ninth year, the grant program helps North Carolina cities and towns develop a comprehensive overall strategy for expanding bicycle and pedestrian opportunities within a given community.

Recipients were selected from a pool of 20 applications by an awards committee composed of transportation planners from across the state, including representatives of both rural and municipalities, metropolitan planning organizations and councils of government.

These municipalities are expected to initiate the planning process this fall.

Jacksonville High teacher arrested for sex with student

JACKSONVILLE, NC (WWAY) — A Jacksonville High School teacher has been arrest and accused of having sex with a student, according to WCTI in New Bern. The arrest happened around 9:30 a.m. at the school.

The Jacksonville Daily News reports the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office arrested Christopher Howard, 33, who is the school’s band director and chair of the Fine Arts Department. The paper says he is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old female student at the school.

Truck crashes into WAVE transit bus

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A pick-up truck slammed into a WAVE transit bus this morning.

It happened at 2399 Carolina Beach Road in Wilmington at about 7:00 a.m.

New Hanover County Dispatch says that the city bus had stopped, and the truck slammed into it while it was stationary.

According to dispatch, no one was hurt in the accident.
