SBI investigating BSL police chief

Monday, June 11th, 2012

BOILING SPRING LAKES, NC (WWAY) — The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into allegations against Boiling Spring Lakes Police Chief Emmett Ballree.

SBI spokeswoman Noelle Talley confirmed the investigation, which she said was request by a Superior Court judge and the District Attorney. Talley did not comment on the nature of the investigation and allegations.

When we called for comment, a woman who answered the phone at the BSL Police Department said Ballree is out today.

This is not the first time Ballree has been investigated. In 2008, a Training and Standards committee cleared Ballree after he was accused of misusing a town credit card to buy fuel for his personal car when he was police chief in Mount Olive.

Supreme Court refuses to hear ‘birther’ argument again

Monday, June 11th, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal challenging President Barack Obama’s US citizenship and his eligibility to serve as commander in chief.

Without comment, the high court on Monday refused to hear an appeal from Alan Keyes, Wiley Drake and Markham Robinson.

The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the challengers did not have legal standing to file the lawsuit.

The US Constitution says only “a natural born citizen” may serve as president. The challengers allege that Obama, whose father was Kenyan, was born in that African country, rather than in Hawaii. They claim his Hawaii birth certificate is a forgery. Hawaii officials have repeatedly verified Obama’s citizenship.

Keyes and Drake ran against Obama on the American Independent Party ticket and Robinson serves as the party’s chairman.

Autism brain samples damaged after freezer problem

Monday, June 11th, 2012

BELMONT, MA (AP) — Scientists say a freezer malfunction at a Boston-area hospital has damaged one-third of the world’s largest collection of autism brain samples.

The Boston Globe reports that an official at Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital in Belmont discovered the freezer had failed in late May without triggering alarms. Inside, 150 thawed brains had turned dark from decay. About a third were part of a collection of autism brains.

Dr. Francine Benes, director of the Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center, says it was “a priceless collection.”

The collection is owned by the advocacy and research organization Autism Speaks. The group says the loss’s impact on future research is unclear. A spokeswoman says the brains had been split in half and the halves that were stored elsewhere weren’t damaged. Some of the damaged brain tissue had already been used in studies.
