McCrory releases travel information as mayor

Thursday, June 7th, 2012

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – North Carolina Republican gubernatorial nominee Pat McCrory’s campaign is releasing his government travel information while Charlotte mayor in the name of transparency, but Democrats say he hasn’t been open enough about his private-sector work and income.

McCrory’s campaign provided expense details Thursday about trips he took while mayor from 1996 through 2009 and were paid for by the city. The events include things like state and national events with other mayors, transit conferences and homeland security meetings.

Democratic Party spokesman Walton Robinson called the records a distraction while McCrory refuses to release tax returns and more information about his work at a Charlotte business. Democratic nominee Walter Dalton has released his returns.

McCrory has said his returns are his private records and he’s disclosed financial information on an ethics form.

Complaint filed against Forsyth County Sheriff

Thursday, June 7th, 2012

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Federal lawyers have filed a complaint against Forsyth County Sheriff William Schatzman saying he unfairly fired a deputy less than a year after the officer was deployed to Afghanistan with the Army National Guard.

The Justice Department said Thursday that the county and Schatzman violated a federal law that protects soldiers returning from overseas from being fired from their jobs for a year without just cause.

Federal officials say the sheriff fired Michael Russell in November 2010 after he bought tickets in a motorcycle raffle that were being sold by Schatzman’s opponent for sheriff. Russell says he just wanted to win the motorcycle and was never told buying the tickets would get him fired.

A message left at the sheriff’s office after hours wasn’t returned.
