Delta launches service between ILM and New York’s LaGuardia

Monday, June 25th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Delta Air Lines is launching daily service today between Wilmington International Airport and New York’s LaGuardia Airport, according to a news release from Delta.

Delta will add a second daily flight July 11 as it completes the largest route expansion at LaGuardia in more than 40 years.

“An important part of our strategy to become the preferred airline in New York is connecting to key business markets, and that includes daily jet service between Wilmington and LaGuardia,” Delta’s senior vice president–New York Gail Grimmett said in a statement.

The new route will use 50-seat regional jets operated by Delta Connection carrier Chatauqua Airlines.

The new flights are part of Delta’s expansion in New York. The airline will increase service at LaGuardia by 60 percent, with 100 new flights and 26 new destinations in spring and summer 2012. When its full schedule is implemented, Delta will operate more than 260 daily flights between LaGuardia and more than 60 cities, exceeding any other carrier.

Delta is investing $160 million to modernize two terminals at LaGuardia and build a connector between them. The expansion at LaGuardia is part of the airline’s strategy to be the preferred carrier in New York, with new routes and more frequencies.

Sen. Burr honored in Wrightsville Beach; talks about upcoming elections

Monday, June 25th, 2012

WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY) — Sen. Richard Burr was in Wrightsville Beach Sunday night to receive the NC Association of Broadcasters Distinguished Service Award.

Although he was there to be honored, he had much more than that on his mind. One of the issues at the top of the list: the elections in November.

“I believe it’s time for a different path,” the Republican said. “The president has gone out and said, ‘If you vote for me, you’re going to vote for exactly the same that you’ve seen for three and a half years.’ I don’t think that’s what America wants.”

Although he doesn’t expect to be the Republican vice presidential nominee, Sen. Burr is passionate about change. Burr says the economy needs to be rejuvenated.

“America needs comprehensive tax reform,” he said. “We need to simplify, reduce and broaden the tax base. We need to put Americans back in charge of their money. We need a smaller, less expensive government. If we’ll do that, we’ll attract capital from around the world.”

Not only did he have something to say about the national economy, but he also talked about what can be done to improve the state economy.

“We produce the second largest pool of graduates of higher education annually of any state in the country other than California,” Burr said. “It means that we are the magnet for capital investment. We’ve just got to preach that word.”

Burr also touched on the local economy, noting that it is great to see Wilmington booming with tourism in the summer.
