Fourth surrenders in Brunswick vet embezzlement, one still sought

A fourth Wilmington woman wanted in connection with the theft of more than a quarter million dollars from a disabled Brunswick County veteran was jailed this week.

Woman dies in afternoon house fire

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A woman is dead after an afternoon house fire near Leland.

The fire broke out just after 12:30 p.m. on Farm Meadows Drive off NC 87.

Firefighters say they put out the fire within three minutes arriving. During a search, they found Donna Byrd Hambrick, 47, in a bedroom. She died at a hospital.

The fire is under investigation, but foul play is not suspected, according to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.

Marist/NBC Poll: Obama and Romney in close contest here in North Carolina

MARIST COLLEGE (NEWS RELEASE) — President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are competitive in the presidential contest in North Carolina. Among registered voters including those who are undecided yet leaning toward a candidate, 46% support Obama while 44% favor Romney. One percent backs another candidate, and 9% are undecided.

“In 2008, President Obama narrowly edged out John McCain in the state,” says Dr. Lee M. Miringoff, Director of The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion. “The electorate is similarly divided this presidential contest.”
