Nicholas Sparks movie ‘Safe Haven’ starts shooting in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Shooting is underway in Wilmington on Nicholas Sparks’s book-turned-movie “Safe Haven.”

A publicist says Brookwood Avenue off Market Street will serve as Boston in the movie.

No big stars are in town yet, but Julianne Hough could begin filming as early as tomorrow.

The cast will shoot in Wilmington for two weeks before moving to Southport, where most of the movie is set.

Road reopens after fatal crash in Brunswick County

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — One person is dead, and another injured after a car accident in Brunswick County this morning. It happened on River Road (NC 133) near Melanie Way, south of Leland around 7:30 a.m.

One driver was trying to pass the vehicle in front of them when he hit another car head-on, slinging both cars to opposite sides of the road.

River Road was closed as investigators and emergency crews worked to pull both drivers from the vehicles and clear the scene. One driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other driver was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, but was responsive at the scene.

The drivers’ identities will be released once next of kin is notified. No charges have been filed at this time.

River Road is now open to traffic.

Woman charged with smuggling drugs into jail

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Investigators say a Bladen County woman tried to smuggle drugs in the county jail, but landed herself behind bars instead.

Deputies arrested Anicet Delgado Ibarra, 20, of Elizabethtown yesterday and charged her with possession of a controlled substance in jail.

They say Ibarra brought three pair of white boxer shorts to the jail to give to an inmate. A jailer found that the liner had been cut in the front of the boxers and plastic baggies had been pushed down into the cut area. The baggies contained a white powder substance.

Ibarra is currently in the Bladen County Jail under a $2,500 secured bond.
