5 NC congressmen want stamp for John Hope Franklin

Saturday, July 14th, 2012

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Five North Carolina congressmen are among those calling for a stamp to honor the life of John Hope Franklin, the famous African-American historian who taught at Duke University.

Democratic Reps. Brad Miller, G.K. Butterfield, Mike McIntyre, David Price and Melvin Watt signed the letter to the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee.

In 1995, Franklin received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. He led President Clinton’s Initiative on Race in 1997. His book, “From Slavery to Freedom: A History of African Americans” is considered the definitive account of being black in the United States.

He died in March 2009.

Pasta company to open facility in Forest City

Saturday, July 14th, 2012

FOREST CITY, NC (AP) — A California company that makes international foods that include organic and gluten-free varieties will open its new East Coast manufacturing operation in Forest City, creating more than 300 jobs over the next three years.

Gov. Beverly Perdue said Friday that Valley Fine Foods will open the facility in the Rutherford County city. Valley Fine is based near Napa Valley, Calif., and makes gourmet pasta dishes, including fresh ravioli, tortellini and gnocchi. The business began in 1984.

The company received a grant for locating in North Carolina. The grant could yield almost $3 million in maximum benefits if the company meets the targets stated in the grant and sustains them for 10 years.
