New Hanover grad turned NFL player Jay Ross holds free football camp

Saturday, July 14th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Cape Fear produces lots of great athletes who are also great people. NFL player Jay Ross is one of them.

Ross is a New Hanover High alum who is now playing for the Buffalo Bills. Saturday, Ross held his annual free football camp at the Martin Luther King center in Wilmington. Ross says while the drills are about footwork and football, he hopes the lessons the kids learn help them on and off the field.

“A lot of these kids out here, I’m teaching them how to grow up and be men,” Ross said. “I’m telling them to be positive and listen to their teachers, do good in school and listen to their parents. Because, believe it or not, a lot of them don’t have male figures in their lives.”

Ross hopes he can be a good role model for the kids. He said many participants are repeats, so he feels the one-day camp does have a lasting impact.

Goodyear plant in NC may shut down for a week

Saturday, July 14th, 2012

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (AP) — The Goodyear tire plant in Fayetteville may shut down for a week in August to reduce its inventory in the slow economy.

The Fayetteville Observer reported the possibility Saturday.

Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. spokesman Richard Evans says officials have discussed shutting down for a week if the market doesn’t improve. Evans says layoffs are not part of the discussion.

The plant’s 2,800 workers make about 35,000 tires daily. The plant is among the region’s largest and highest-paying employers.

All workers except maintenance staff took off the week of June 30 through July 6 for a scheduled shutdown.

A labor union agreement in 2009 protected the Fayetteville plant from closure.
