Greensboro man arrested in fatal hit-and-run

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) – Authorities have arrested a Greensboro man after a hit-and-run incident that killed two people.

The News & Record of Greensboro reports (http://bit.ly/Mft82r ) that 49-year-old Julio Romero faces a number of charges, including two counts of felony hit-and-run and driving without a license.

Police say the two people were killed as they tried to cross Randleman Road around 5:45 a.m. Tuesday as they walked from a shopping center. Investigators would only say the victims were a man in his early 50s and a woman. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, officers discovered a black Chevrolet Astro van with damage parked in front of Romero’s residence. Romero was later arrested at an auto parts salvage yard, and police said he had replacement parts to repair the van.

Triad NBC affiliate off cable in contract dispute

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) – Time Warner Cable and the parent company of the NBC affiliate in Winston-Salem have failed to resolve a contract dispute, taking the station off the air and leaving local viewers with a Pennsylvania station to watch instead.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports the squabble between the cable company and the owners of WXII involves the fees for retransmission consent, which allows a cable company to carry a broadcast channel.

Time Warner Cable issued a statement Tuesday saying Hearst Television chose to black out WXII’s signal rather than continue negotiating. The television station said that unless there’s a change in Time Warner’s position, WXII will no longer be available to Time Warner systems.

Winston-Salem-area subscribers are currently getting NBC programming, but not local news and information, from WBRE in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
