Teen volunteers battle heat to finish week of service

Friday, July 27th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Potentially record-setting heat in Wilmington today was not enough to keep some volunteers from their work. Group Workcamps volunteers from across the country have been working all week repairing homes for the needy.

Even with temperatures soaring into the triple digits, the group of teens from across the nation pushed through the heat to help out the community.

Volunteers came for Group Workcamps, an intensive one-week mission trip, to do much-needed home repairs for elderly, disabled, and low income families in our area. Finishing up their week meant working through extreme heat.

“It gets really hot, and it’s hard to stay motivated, but helping the people really helps us keep going,” volunteer Sidney Tomko said.

“It has been extremely hard to work because of the heat, but we’ve stayed hydrated,” volunteer Robin Russell said. “We’ve had our Gatorade, and it hasn’t hurt our spirit. We’ve stayed focused. It’s been a great week here in Wilmington.”

Those receiving help from the volunteers did what they could to help keep them safe by providing water and even watermelon salads. They say they are very grateful for all of the work the volunteers have put into helping them.

One homeowner says she is inspired by the volunteers to give back to the community.

“My husband and I are going to give back in some way, even if it’s just a little donation every month,” Sara Johnson said. “We do want to give back to them. They’ve given us a brand new start on our home, and it’s just really a blessing.>

About 350 people spent the week volunteering through Group Workcamps. The volunteers repaired homes in New Hanover, Pender and Brunswick Counties.

FIRST ON 3: Boiling Spring Lakes police chief suspended

Friday, July 27th, 2012

BOILING SPRING LAKES, NC (WWAY) — Boiling Spring Lakes has suspended its police chief as it launches an investigation of allegations against him.

City Manager Jeff Repp says Chief Emmett Ballree was suspended with pay this morning. Repp says the city is investigating allegations Ballree abused his power as chief.

Repp says Lt. Rick Spencer is serving as interim chief during Ballree’s suspension. Repp says he hopes to wrap up the investigation “fairly shortly.”

The SBI launched an investigation into Ballree earlier this year at the request of a judge and the District Attorney. Last month DA Jon David would only say the he received a complaint of Ballree committing an alleged criminal act. Repp said the allegation he is investigating is separate from the SBI case.

Ballree has been investigated before. In 2008, a Training and Standards committee cleared Ballree after he was accused of misusing a town credit card to buy fuel for his personal car when he was police chief in Mount Olive.
