Woman dies off NC coast; husband hospitalized

Friday, July 27th, 2012

BUXTON, N.C. (AP) – Authorities say a pregnant woman from Washington, D.C., has died after being pulled from the water near Buxton.

The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reports that 31-year-old Jill Chenet was pronounced dead after being taken by helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Virginia.

Her husband, 37-year-old Matthew Chenet, was also pulled from the water by rescue workers and was hospitalized.

National Park Service spokeswoman Cyndy Holda said rescue workers discovered the couple floating face down about 20 yards from shore Wednesday. Holda said onlookers were attempting to go in after the couple.

Holda said when rescue workers brought Jill Chenet to shore, she was not breathing and had no pulse. She said Matthew Chenet was having difficulty breathing when rescue workers brought him to shore.

NC teen accused of stealing money from grocer

Thursday, July 26th, 2012

ERWIN, N.C. (AP) – A teenager who bagged and stocked groceries at an Erwin store is accused by police of stealing $31,000 from the business since May.

The Fayetteville Observer reports that 18-year-old Cody Lee Jernigan of Dunn is charged by Erwin police with eight counts of larceny by employee, and with larceny and possessing stolen property,

Police also said four other teenagers who didn’t work at the store face charges because Jernigan gave them some of the money.

A detective said when the store manager left his office, Jernigan would slip inside and take money. He said a surveillance camera recorded some of the thefts.

Jernigan and two of the teenagers are free under $25,000 bond each. A third remains jailed, and the fourth teenager is a 15-year-old charged through juvenile petitions.

UNC faculty seeks review of athletics, academics

Thursday, July 26th, 2012

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – A report by a special faculty committee at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is calling for an independent commission of outside experts in higher education to review athletics and academics at the university.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that the panel investigating the school’s academic fraud scandal found an athletics program largely divorced from the faculty. The report also found academic counselors for athletes improperly involved in helping them enroll in classes and poor oversight of faculty administrators who have wide latitude in running their departments.

The report released on Thursday doesn’t criticize UNC’s efforts to find out why 54 classes within the African and Afro-American Studies Department had little or no instruction in four years. The classes were enrolled largely with athletes.
