Film leaders say Charlotte studio would complement Wilmington, not compete

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington could soon have some competition in the film industry here in the Tar Heel State.

After last night, Charlotte is one step closer to having a movie production facility of its own.

After years of debate, the Charlotte City Council agreed to buy Eastland Mall for $13 million. One proposal includes transforming the mall into a movie studio. It’s a vision many city leaders support.

Johnny Griffin, director of the Wilmington Regional Film Commission, says if it does pan out, the new facility could help the entire state, including Wilmington.

“There have been projects throughout the state that have needed coastal scenes that come here,” Griffin said. “Obviously all of the vendors that send equipment all over the state, the crew travels across the state. Productions that are in Charlotte right now have Wilmington crew working on them, so certainly more business statewide is only good for the entire industry in the state.”

Griffin says he does not think a Charlotte production facility would affect the industry in our area. He says projects tend to come here because of the location and the look the region has to offer, and Charlotte cannot compete with that.

Perdue signs work licensing bill to help military

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

GOLDSBORO, NC (AP) — Gov. Bev Perdue has signed a bill to help people connected to the military receive state occupational licenses to perform specialized work in North Carolina.

Perdue signed the bill Tuesday during a ceremony in a veterans’ park in Goldsboro.

The bill makes it easier for people certified to work in certain fields by the military or military spouses licensed elsewhere to receive their certification in North Carolina. The new rules are to be implemented within the next year.

Perdue now has seven bills left from the Legislature since it adjourned three weeks ago. She has until Aug. 2 to sign them, veto them or let them become law without her signature.

FIRST ON 3: OIB first responders not sure what bit child in water

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

OCEAN ISLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Emergency workers are investigating an apparent animal bite in the water at Ocean Isle Beach.

The Ocean Isle Beach Police Department says the call came in from the beach strand in the 100 block of West 1st Street.

Ocean Isle Beach Mayor Debbie Smith says she talked to first responders, who say they’re not sure what bit the boy. She says emergency workers say it was a small bite, and that based on their experience it looks more like a bluefish bite than a shark bite.

This is not the first call of its kind at Ocean Isle Beach this summer. Last month a shark bit a girl who was on vacation with her family in the Brunswick County beach town.

WWAY has a crew at the scene. Our reporter saw a young boy being loaded into an ambulance at the beach with apparent injuries to his leg or foot. No word what hospital the child will be taken to. The child’s mother did not want to talk about what happened.
