WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal law enforcement officials say the suspect in Friday’s deadly shooting in Colorado is James Holmes, a 24-year-old white American.

Officials believe Holmes killed a dozen people when he fired into a crowded movie theater in a Denver suburb. He was wearing a gas mask and set off an unknown gas in the theater.

Holmes is in police custody, and the FBI says there is no indication that incident is tied to any terrorist groups.

The federal law enforcement officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation

NC unemployment steady for third straight month

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina’s unemployment rate has held steady at 9.4 percent for the third straight month.

The state Commerce Department released the numbers for June on Friday morning. The unemployment numbers remain higher than the national average, which was 8.2 percent in June.

North Carolina’s unemployment rate last month was unchanged from April and May. An additional 2,500 North Carolinians were unemployed compared to the last month, but the work force decreased, keeping the rate unchanged.

The state unemployment rate has declined by 1.2 percentage points since June 2011.

Some of North Carolina’s political leaders are gathering Friday to talk jobs in Raleigh. US Sen. Kay Hagan, the president of the North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center, and the head of the state’s community college system are discussing job creation efforts.

Wilmington Council, County Commission to hold joint meeting

Friday, July 20th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington City Council and the New Hanover County Commission could be taking steps to break the ice on their relationship. The two sides have announced a joint meeting next month.

A public notice from the county says commissioners and council members will meet together Aug. 9 at 9 a.m. at the New Hanover County Executive Development Center on Military Cutoff Road.

The relationship between the two governing bodies has been cool of late. Earlier this year County Commission chair Ted Davis pulled out of talks about a proposed ballpark when the city moved forward with a voluntary annexation of a parcel of land on Market Street that the county opposed.
