LUMBERTON, NC (WWAY) — A Columbus County man is being held without bond after he was charged with killing a Lumberton police officer yesterday.
WTVD in Raleigh says Marques Ramon Brown, 27, of Whiteville made a video appearance in Robeson County Court this morning and asked for an attorney.
He is accused of shooting Master Police Officer Jeremiah Montgomery Goodson Jr. at a gas station just off Interstate 95 late Tuesday morning.
The 33-year-old officer was off-duty when he saw a man wanted on other charges. Investigators say he waited for another officer before approaching the suspect’s car. As the officers walked up, authorities say Brown began shooting, and Goodson was struck several times. He died a short time later at the hospital.
Goodson had been with the police department since 2006.
This is not Brown’s first run-in with the law. The NC Department of Corrections website shows Brown’s record includes convictions for breaking and entering, larceny, possession of stolen goods and stealing a car.
