Lumberton police officer shot and killed at gas station

LUMBERTON, NC (WPDE) — A Lumberton police officer has died after being shot Tuesday morning, according to Captain Johnny Barnes.

The officer was off-duty when he spotted a suspect wanted by Lumberton police at the Express Depo/Dairy Queen on Fayettville Road and called for backup.

An officer in a marked patrol car arrived and when they approached the suspect’s car, the suspect started firing from inside the vehicle.

The officer was hit more than once.

He died a couple of hours later at the hospital.
