GE Aviation lands $17.5 billion in contracts at UK air show

GE Aviation brought in $17.5 billion in orders for engines and services at the recent Farnborough Air Show in England, and the company’s plant in Castle Hayne is involved in almost all the business.

“It solidifies our future here,” said plant manager Kevin Prindable.

Hiring will be gradual and amount to about five to 10 people annually for the next four or five years, he said.

But the orders will spawn new technology.

Lumberton police officer shot at gas station

LUMBERTON, NC (AP) — Authorities say a Lumberton police officer has been shot at a gas station.

Investigators said the shooting happened Tuesday morning.

Police are still gathering information about what the officer was doing at the station, whether he was on duty and his condition. They also have not released whether they have a suspect in the shooting.

The State Bureau of Investigation is helping the Lumberton Police and Robeson County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation.

Hoggard alum, UNC guard Cooper nominated for national award

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Hoggard High School graduate and current University of North Carolina offensive guard, Jonathan Cooper, is a nominee for the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

Through the Good Works Team, Allstate and the AFCA recognize the community service contributions of college football players.

Cooper’s resume of community service accomplishments includes:

-Teaching golf lessons to underprivileged youth
-Actively participating in the Share Your Holiday campaign by donating money and shopping for gifts to deliver to local families in need
-Building a home with Habitat for Humanity

From the 117 nominees, a selection panel will select two 11-player Good Works Teams that will be announced in late September – one for the Football Bowl Subdivision (Div. I-A) and the other for the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and NAIA.

Past members of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® include Super Bowl champion quarterbacks, Peyton and Eli Manning, ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer and 2011 Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III.

Police officer shot in Lumberton

LUMBERTON, NC (WPDE) — A Lumberton police officer was shot Tuesday morning on Fayetteville Road, according to Captain Johnny Barnes.

Barnes would not give a location, but we’re told it happened somewhere near the Dairy Queen.
