STORMTRACK 3: Severe T-Storm Watch canceled; still expect scattered storms

Sunday, August 19th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Damaging winds and large hail will be possible in thunderstorms that form this afternoon and evening.

A stalled front across the central Carolinas is providing a boundary between drier, cooler air to the west with warmer, and more humid air here along the coast. This battleground will cause thunderstorms to blossom.

Stay tuned to WWAY on-air, online, and on Facebook and Twitter throughout the day.

87-year-old woman foils attempted robbery in NC

Sunday, August 19th, 2012

HENDERSONVILLE, NC (AP) — The Henderson County sheriff says people who break into homes are taking a big risk, even if their intended victim is an 87-year-old woman.

Sheriff Charles McDonald tells the Asheville Citizen-Times that two men face first-degree burglary charges in connection with the break-in last week at a woman’s Highland Lake community home. He says the two men fled after she displayed a 9mm pistol.

The men were arrested and could face more charges in connection with other break-ins.

McDonald says both men involved in the robbery last week were armed. He declined to be more specific, citing the ongoing investigation.

He says the woman who chased off the two men is doing fine.

STORMTRACK 3: Severe Thunderstorms possible today. Watch until 6pm.

Sunday, August 19th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Damaging winds and large hail will be possible in thunderstorms that form this afternoon and evening. The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the entire area until 6pm.

A stalled front across the central Carolinas is providing a boundary between drier, cooler air to the west with warmer, and more humid air here along the coast. This battleground will cause thunderstorms to blossom later today, and allow them to strengthen to severe levels.

A severe thunderstorm watch means that severe weather is possible, but is not yet occurring. If and when severe storms form, severe thunderstorm warnings will be issued. Stay tuned to WWAY on-air, online, and on Facebook and Twitter throughout the day.
