Cinema Drive reopened after nationwide bomb threat

Friday, August 17th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police have reopened Cinema Drive after a bomb threat was called into the corporate headquarters of Carmike Cinemas.

According to investigators, the threat claimed that there was a bomb in one or more Carmike locations across the country. As a result, Carmike informed its theaters and local police, including in Wilmington.

Normally, WWAY does not report on bomb threats, but given the nature of this particular threat, we thought the information was valuable for our viewers.

The police department gave the all-clear around 11:45 a.m. after it determined with theater managers that there was no credible threat.

WPD set up a command center at Sonic on Market Street. In addition to the theater, the threat impacted Hometown Wilmington Media across the street. The building is home to radio stations The Big Talker, The Bone, The Penguin and Bach Radio, where employees tell us they were under lockdown.

NC July unemployment rate going back up; Now at 9.6 percent

Friday, August 17th, 2012

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina’s unemployment rate increased slight to 9.6 percent in July but still remains below the rate from the same time last year.

The rate increased from the 9.4 percent June figure, which had held steady for three months. The North Carolina rate remains higher than the national rate of 8.3 percent.

The state unemployment rate in July 2011 was 10.7 percent.

The state Commerce Department says the number of employed people decreased by almost 14,000 to about 4.2 million over the month but increased by about 49,000 over the past year.

Initial claims for unemployment insurance totaled more than 64,000, increasing by almost 18,000 from June. Almost 445,000 people were unemployed in North Carolina in July.

Romney campaign rejects Obama camp’s offer on taxes

Friday, August 17th, 2012

BOSTON (AP) — Mitt Romney’s campaign says it’s clear that President Barack Obama just wants to talk about Romney’s taxes, rather than “the issues that matter to voters.”

It’s rejecting an offer from the Democrats. The Obama campaign offered to stop pushing for further releases of Romney’s tax returns, if the Republican will release five years of those returns. Romney has released only his 2010 return, and is pledging to release the one from 2011.

Yesterday, Romney said he went back and looked at his tax returns from the past decade, and found that he had paid at least 13 percent of his income in federal taxes in each of those years. Democrats said he should prove it.

Meanwhile, the Obama campaign has launched a new ad defending the president’s record on Medicare. The ad accuses Romney and running mate Paul Ryan of undermining the health care program that is critical for millions of seniors.
