Dunn considers ban of sagging pants

Thursday, August 16th, 2012

DUNN, NC (AP) — Sagging pants may be on the way out in Dunn.

The Fayetteville Observer reports Dunn City Council plans an ordinance to ban saggy pants.

Council’s instructions to the city attorney this week came despite public criticism and a letter from the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina. The letter suggests the ban could be unconstitutional and would be too vague to be enforced.

The idea could be discussed at a meeting Sept. 11.

Mayor Pro Tem Carnell Robinson proposed the ordinance that would outlaw wearing pants more than three inches below the waste.

Robinson is past director of the North Carolina Black Leadership Caucus. He has denied that the ordinance could be considered racist. He says there is nothing positive about the fashion trend.

Tropical Storm Gordon forms in the Atlantic; no threat to US expected

Thursday, August 16th, 2012

MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Gordon has formed in the Atlantic but is expected to move away from the United States.

Gordon’s maximum sustained winds early Thursday are near 40 mph (65 kph). The U.S. National Hurricane Center says some strengthening is forecast over the next two days and Gordon could become a hurricane over the weekend.

Gordon is centered about 585 miles (940 kilometers) east of Bermuda and is moving north-northeast near 14 mph (22 kph).

The storm’s forecast track shows it moving farther east in the Atlantic over the next few days and the hurricane center says those in the Azores should monitor its progress.

Meanwhile in the Pacific, Tropical Depression Hector is weakening and is expected to become a remnant low later in the day.

Wilmington woman uses iPhone to create unique artwork

Thursday, August 16th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Many of us have used smart phones to take pictures and upload them to social media web sites. One Wilmington woman is going above and beyond by utilizing her iPhone to turn photos into works of art.

Dorian Hill has always loved taking pictures, but says the iPhone has allowed her to take them faster and more conveniently. Her iPhone photos and functional art pieces, like bags and accessories that display the pictures, are sold in Wilmington and several other North Carolina stores.

“Technology is advancing,” Hill says. “The tools are getting smaller and I must say I have met some photographers that are a little perturbed that they have thousands of dollars of equipment and I’ve got an iPhone.”

Hill’s art is currently being featured at Lovey’s Market at 1319 Military Cutoff Road. Her solo exhibit “iPhoneography” will be on display there all month long. Many of her functional art pieces can be found at the downtown Wilmington store Planet, located at 108 North Front Street.
