UNC-Chapel Hill head: Peppers grades glance a goof

CHAPEL HILL, NC (AP) — The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s chancellor says a lapse in student record-keeping on the campus computer system led to the online release of a former football star’s grades, prompting new questions about special treatment for athletes at the school.

Chancellor Holden Thorpe spoke Thursday to a UNC Board of Governors panel investigating academic fraud at the Chapel Hill campus. Campus investigations found signs of no-show classes, altered grades, and forged signatures.

Thorpe says the school apologized to former Tar Heels star Julius Peppers after his academic transcript was discovered on an unprotected part of the school’s data storage system. Peppers got low grades in several courses, but remained eligible with much better grades in classes offered by the department at the heart of the scandal.
