VP Biden coming to Durham for campaign stop

Monday, August 13th, 2012

DURHAM, NC (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden is returning to North Carolina – a state already teeming with President Obama’s campaign workers and TV commercials seeking to persuade voters into giving him the state’s electoral votes for a second time.

Biden planned to visit Durham on Monday as part of Obama’s re-election efforts to differentiate him from Mitt Romney on the economy, taxes and the middle class.

Biden came to Winston-Salem in June and has made several trips to North Carolina since 2008.

The event at the Durham Armory comes one day after Romney and his vice-presidential pick Paul Ryan campaigned in the state.

Romney’s and Obama’s campaigns have opened dozens of local offices in the state. The campaigns and their supporters already have spent tens of millions of dollars on ads.

Billy Graham admitted to hospital for infection

Monday, August 13th, 2012

ASHEVILLE, NC (AP) — A spokesman for Billy Graham says the 93-year-old evangelist has been admitted to an Asheville hospital for an inflection in his lungs.

A joint statement Sunday from Graham’s spokesman and Mission Hospital says Graham was admitted overnight for evaluation and treatment of an infection thought to be bronchitis. The hospital is near his home in Montreat.

Pulmonologist David Pucci says Graham is resting comfortably and his condition is stable. He is receiving antibiotics.

Graham was hospitalized for pneumonia last November. His staff says the evangelist’s health has been good since his release, though he remains at home due to age-related conditions. He is working on a manuscript.
