Louisiana and Mississippi brace for Isaac; Tropical downpours being felt here

Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Isaac will make landfall overnight near the coast of Mississippi or Louisiana as a hurricane. The center of the storm will stay away from southeastern North Carolina.

But, we are still feeling some indirect effects of the storm. The large circulation has drawn up some tropical moisture and is sending it into the coastal Carolinas right now. This heavy rain will persist on and off through Thursday morning as it interacts with a cold front. Minor flooding will be possible, especially in areas prone to standing water.

Once the front moves through on Thursday, drier air will push in. We expect lots of sunshine by Friday and Saturday.

You can always see up-to-the-minute forecasts from the StormTrack 3 Weather Team at Hurricanes 101, and catch a full Tropical Video Update

Sheriff investigates shooting death in Mount Airy

Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

MOUNT AIRY, NC (AP) — The SBI and sheriff’s deputies are investigating a shooting death during a domestic assault in Surry County.

Officials say officers found 41-year-old Christopher Montgomery Tulley dead when they arrived at home in Mount Airy on Sunday night.

Deputies say a teen saw Tully assaulting his wife, who is the teen’s mother. The teen tried to stop the attack and when he was unable to do so, he shot Tully in the head with a .410 shotgun.

Neither the woman nor the teen were identified.

Deputies say the teen is cooperating with investigators.

Sheriff Graham Atkinson says investigators will meet with prosecutors to determine if any charges will be filed. But Atkinson says the teen may have saved his mother’s life.

FIRST ON 3: New Hanover Co. Commissioners talking to Cal Ripken Baseball about building private stadium

Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A spokesman for a local group that’s against a tax funded baseball stadium in Wilmington tells us New Hanover County is talking with Cal Ripkin about building a stadium and mall with private money.

There’s a debate over whether the land is in the county or the city, but it is not located downtown.

Currently Mandalay is negotiating with the City of Wilmington to build a tax-funded stadium downtown for an estimated $37 million. Voters will get to decide whether to approve that bond during the election this November. That stadium would built on the north end of Downtown Wilmington.

Marcy is working on this story today and will have more later today here online and on WWAY NewsChannel 3 at 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm.
