ONLY ON 3: Newspaper ads stir WASTEC controversy

Monday, August 27th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Two full page ads in the Sunday edition of the StarNews are getting some special attention today.

The first ad was placed by Covanta Energy. A spokesperson for the company says the advertisement was designed to let the community know who the company is and what it could provide to New Hanover County as the world’s largest provider of waste energy services.

Although the ad never mentions the name WASTEC, the company insinuates it can turn waste into energy and would like a shot at running the county’s waste facility.

Comissioner chair Ted Davis says the county is still learning more about Covanta and does not have enough information yet to make any type of decision.

Meanwhile, another ad in the Sunday paper strongly opposes Covanta coming to town. It closely compares the company and its operation to WASTEC and says the county commissioners are trying to pull one over on the community.

We tried to contact a group or a person behind the oppositional ad. No one returned our calls or our emails. The New Hanover County Commission says they have also tried to reach out to someone with this group and no one has ever shown.

Commissioners say they think the ad and others like it are paid for by someone out for their own good.

“I think they’re a bunch of trash haulers and big haulers somebody that wants to stir up controversy in the community,” said Commissioner Jonathan Barfield. “We’ve asked them to come forward and come to our meetings to be public with who they are and they’ve yet to do that. They hide behind an ad that’s in the newspaper. The reality is the trash is going to be an issue for our community.”

Davis says the commissioners are planning on discussing the ads at their meeting Thursday. He says he’s going to ask the county manager to look into some of the allegations before making any decisions.
