NC Army base celebrates role of women in defense

Friday, August 24th, 2012

FORT BRAGG, NC (AP) — Fort Bragg is honoring the legacy of military women with a speech by an Army pioneer.

Army spokesman Ben Abel says retired Army Col. Marsha Lunt speaks Friday during a Women’s Equality Day observance at the Fort Bragg Club. The event is free and open to the public.

Lunt was commissioned in 1978 and was one of the first female ROTC cadets to become Airborne qualified.

While serving with the 8th Medical Battalion in Germany, Lunt led an all-female U.S. military team on a four-day, 100-mile march. She worked with medical units around the world and retired as an Army Reserve officer in 2008.

Lunt has worked as the emergency manager at Fort Bragg’s Womack Army Medical Center since 2002.

NRC, Duke Energy meet over NC nuclear plant

Friday, August 24th, 2012

NEW HILL, NC (AP) — The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is meeting with Charlotte-based Duke Energy officials to discuss two apparent safety violations at a nuclear plant inherited after its merger with Raleigh-based Progress Energy.

The nation’s nuclear regulator and company officials meet Friday in Atlanta to review issues at the Shearon Harris Nuclear Plant that are considered to be of low to moderate significance.

The NRC says the plant’s emergency operations ventilation system was out of service for extended periods of time over two years. The other apparent violation involves a change the company made to how much unfiltered air could get into the technical support center without a technical basis for the change.

No emergencies occurred requiring the use of either feature during those two years and the problems have since been corrected.
