Romney says US energy independence is achievable

Thursday, August 23rd, 2012

HOBBS, NM (AP) — Republican Mitt Romney says his pledge to make the US energy independent by 2020 is not “some pie in the sky” idea.

The GOP presidential candidate says his plans for reaching that goal include increased offshore oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and off the coast of Virginia and North Carolina. He also wants to give states the power to start energy production on federal lands.

Boosting US energy production is a key aspect of Romney’s economic proposals. He says his energy plans would create more than 3 million Americans jobs.

Romney said President Barack Obama’s energy policies have focused too much on new technologies like wind and solar, to the detriment of oil and natural gas.

Despite storm, GOP expects convention open Monday

Thursday, August 23rd, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican officials say they are moving forward with plans to hold the Republican National Convention on Monday as scheduled, despite an approaching tropical storm.

Convention CEO William Harris said Thursday he’s continuing preparations and is working with Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign, the National Weather Service and Florida officials to track the impact of Tropical Storm Isaac.

The storm is approaching hurricane strength. It’s expected to move into the Gulf Coast early next week, just as thousands of GOP delegates and journalists pour into Tampa.

Harris says Florida officials have assured convention planners they have enough resources in place to respond to the storm should it make landfall. He says the primary concern is for those in the storm’s path.

Tampa-area law enforcement says that the storm could complicate convention security.

FIRST ON 3 UPDATE: Magic Johnson to speak at UNCW this fall

Thursday, August 23rd, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As you saw FIRST ON 3 last night, basketball great Earvin “Magic” Johnson will be the first speaker at UNCW’s new Wilma Daniels Distinguished Lecture Promoting Diversity & Tolerance.

A gift from Daniels, a member of the UNCW Board of Trustees, will fund Johnson’s appearance at Trask Coliseum Oct. 11. The public is invited to attend this free event, but tickets will be required.

Johnson, a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, who is also part owner of Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers, as well as a chain of movie theaters, will focus his talk on building a successful life, overcoming challenges and achieving personal goals. UNCW is working with local schools and youth groups to bring in several hundred middle school students to hear Johnson’s message.

“UNCW has excellent initiatives related to diversity and tolerance, which this new lecture will build upon and strengthen,” Daniels said during a news conference announcing the donation. “I wanted to work with the university to bring someone to campus to inspire young people, and to forge deeper relationships between the local African-American community and the campus.”

The Daniels Lecture will be part of a week-long celebration of diversity, including numerous cultural and educational events. A full event schedule will be made available in September.

Tickets to Johnson’s lecture will be available starting Sept. 24 from the UNCW Athletics Ticket Office located in Trask Coliseum.
