Ryan to extend NC campaign swing by another day

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2012

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan is extending his visit to North Carolina by another day.

Mitt Romney’s campaign announced the presumptive Republican vice presidential nominee will now hold a round-table discussion on defense issues Thursday in Fayetteville, home of Fort Bragg.

The new event was announced as Ryan planned to attend a Wednesday afternoon rally at a Raleigh power painting company. He was to attend a private fundraiser later at a home in Raleigh.

Ryan began a two-state swing Wednesday morning in Roanoke, VA. Virginia and North Carolina are two states where President Barack Obama put electoral votes in the Democratic column in 2008 for the first time in decades.

Several liberal-leaning groups planned their own rally outside the Raleigh fundraiser to protest Ryan’s views on Medicare and taxes.

CDC: Alarming increase seen in West Nile cases

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2012

MIKE STOBBE
AP Medical Writer

ATLANTA (AP) — US health officials say there’s been an alarming increase in the number of West Nile cases.

So far there have been more than 1,100 cases reported through the middle of August. That’s three times as many as usually seen at this point in the year. About half the cases are in Texas. Most West Nile infections are reported in August and September.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the new numbers Wednesday. They say the mild winter, early spring and very hot summer have fostered breeding of the mosquitoes. Mosquitoes pick up the virus from birds and then spread it to people.

West Nile virus was first reported in the United States in 1999.
