Solar farms dot Camp Lejeune

Tuesday, August 21st, 2012

JACKSONVILLE, NC (AP) — The Marines are going green at Camp Lejeune as solar farms are popping up across the base in eastern North Carolina.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reports that facilities engineer manager Thomas Burton says the photovoltaic panels are being put up wherever there is space. That includes building rooftops, fields not being used for training and in canopies over parking lots.

The idea is to save electricity costs at the base. Officials estimate the solar arrays will save about $500,000 a year.

The most visible solar farm is near the base’s main gate. That array has the capacity to generate enough electricity to power 100 homes for a year.

Ohio man makes 1st court appearance in NC death

Tuesday, August 21st, 2012

MANTEO, NC (AP) — An Ohio man charged with killing his on-and-off girlfriend in North Carolina remains in jail without bond after his first court appearance.

The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reported that 27-year-old Nathan Summerfield was in a Dare County courtroom on Tuesday. Judge Edgar Barnes read the charge and appointed an attorney.

He’s scheduled to appear in court Sept. 10 for a grand jury hearing.

He’s accused in the death of 33-year-old Lynn Jackenheimer of Ashland, OH, who disappeared while on a July 4 vacation in Salvo with her two children and Summerfield. Her body was later discovered 25 miles from the beach house where they had stayed.

Summerfield returned to Ohio. He left the children with relatives.

US marshals caught Summerfield last weekend in a motel room in Medina, OH.
