Officials in Buncombe County say 10 show horses were killed when their barn burned to the ground.

Saturday, September 29th, 2012

FAIRVIEW, N.C. (AP) – Officials in Buncombe County say 10 show horses were killed when their barn burned to the ground.

The Asheville Citizen Times reports a caretaker who lived in an apartment inside B&B Stables managed to escape with minor injuries. Officials said no one else was hurt in Thursday night’s fire.

Horse trainer John Toney leased space in the barn. He said he tried to free the frightened animals from the burning stable, but could only get one out before he was forced back by the smoke. Toney said a second horse managed to escape.

Jeff Tracz of the Asheville-Buncombe Arson Task Force said investigators began inspecting the debris Friday for a possible cause, paying particular attention to the electrical system and other utilities. He said witnesses were interviewed.

Laney High Class of ’82 reunites for homecoming game

Saturday, September 29th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It was a special Friday night for the Laney Buccaneers. Not only was it the school’s homecoming game against undefeated Hoggard, but the class of 1982 celebrated 30 years since graduation.

Organizer Carl Davis says the reunion has been six months in the making. He’s happy to see so many familiar faces. “I’m impressed to see so many show up,” Davis said.

Davis says it’s interesting to see how the city and school have both grown over the last thirty years. He also walked the halls with Michael Jordan, whom classmates knew as “Mike”, a guy with some serious round ball skills.

And of course, it’s not a reunion, unless the class clown makes an appearance.

“What’s up guys? The cheap seats, yeah that’s good,” Lance Morrison said to the crowd.

Alice Lawrence now lives in Raleigh but wouldn’t miss an opportunity to reconnect with old friends.

“I love it cause I’m coming home. This is a true homecoming,” Lawrence said.

And of course, the buccaneers from years past are still standing behind the ole blue and gold to be tonight’s champs.

“We have it in us to win. We are the Laney Buccaneers,” 1982 grad Panza McNeill said.
