STORMTRACK 3: Damaging winds possible in severe storms today

Tuesday, September 18th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Damaging winds, and even an isolated tornado will be possible across North Carolina today. A strong system is crossing the southeast, and has many ingredients of a severe weather outbreak.

A strong cold front to our west is allow tropical moisture to surge up the East Coast. As this front pushes farther east, it will spark some showers and thunderstorms. The way the atmosphere is today, it will be easy for any storms that do form to turn severe.

The main threat today will be damaging winds up to 60-70 mph, but a few isolated tornadoes will be possible across the Carolinas as well. Stay with the StormTrack 3 Weather Team throughout the day for updates on the weather.

Randy Travis’ brother arrested on drug charges

Tuesday, September 18th, 2012

MARSHVILLE, N.C. (AP) – Authorities say the younger brother of country music singer Randy Travis is in custody for methamphetamine possession.

Union County sheriff’s deputies say David “Butter” Traywick of Marshville was arrested last Thursday along with his wife during a raid at the family farm. Authorities identified the 49-year-old as the brother of the 53-year-old Grammy winning recording artist, who’s recently had his own legal problems.

Travis, who lives in Texas and changed his name early in his music career, has been arrested at least three times in the last year. That includes an August arrest for driving while intoxicated, wrecking his car and then laying nude in the middle of a highway.

Traywick’s arrest report says he is suspected of cooking meth in a makeshift lab in the woods near his home.

Wake Co. judge considers bail bondsmen law

Tuesday, September 18th, 2012

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A Wake County judge is giving more thought before deciding whether to block a new law that gives a trade group lone authority to train bail bondsmen in North Carolina.

Superior Court Judge Donald Stephens heard arguments Monday involving a lawsuit filed by a firm competing with the North Carolina Bail Agents Association for training and continuing education needed for bondsmen to remain licensed.

The company behind the North Carolina Bail Academy wants Stephens to issue a preliminary injunction delaying a law effective Oct. 1 that says only the association can provide training. A ruling isn’t expected until late next week.

The company said the law is unconstitutional, but attorneys for the state and the association argue the company fails to explain how.
