FIRST ON 3 UPDATE: Motorcyclist killed after crash with deputy’s car

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Brunswick County Deputy is facing charges after a crash Monday afternoon that killed a motorcyclist. The victim is Thomas Varney of Virginia.

The accident happened on Old Ocean Highway and Shingle Tree near Calabash.

The deputy is charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to yield.

Highway patrol is investigating and has not yet identified the deputy involved. They do not believe alcohol or drugs were involved.

Plans move forward for new Pender jail

Pender County commissioners voted to move forward with plans to build a new jail on Monday night. However, they won't actually purchase the property until an architectural firm completes a due diligence on the land.

One person injured in North 10th street shooting

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police say one man is in the hospital after being shot Monday evening in the 500 block of North 10th Street.

Police say a call came in to dispatch around 6 p.m., with reports of multiple shots fired and one man injured. When officers arrived, they say the victim had already been taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center and the suspect had fled the scene.

Sgt. Matt Ingram with WPD says witnesses describe the suspect as a black male, with long dreads, and wearing a white t-shirt. Ingram says police will continue to circle the area to see if they can identify anyone that might match their description for the suspect.

Ingram says detectives went to the hospital to get more information from the victim, who he says has non-life threatening injuries.
